This EGSA digest involves a baby. My wit cannot compete with a newborn cuteness, so by way of introduction, I’ll just note that I put the baby at the end. Reading about her will be your reward for studying this week’s fabulous EGSA Digest.

This week, you should…

ATTEND the Student Recognition Tea at 2:30 tomorrow (Friday, April 30) in the Faculty Lounge. Awards will be given for outstanding graduate and undergraduate students in English. Following the reception, a tree-planting ceremony in honor Dr. Chinn will take place

COME to next week’s FINAL EGSA MEETING OF THE YEAR! Tuesday, May 4 @ 11:30 A.M. in CS 301 (Reading/Study Day before finals – immediately following the required TA meeting that morning)

KNOW that Drs. Vitanza and Losey are working on possibly adding an American II seminar in the fall because classes are so full. This depends, of course, on professor availability. If students are interested, they should keep watching Bearweb so that they can switch if/when that becomes available. We will also try to send an email to let people know.

ANTICIPATE (pray for, welcome) our soon-to-be colleagues: 18 Incoming Graduate Students, 13 MA and 5 PhD (Fall 2010) CHECK the EGSA website (www.bayloregsa.org/activities) for a lit of upcoming activities, such as tonight’s (4/29) pub night.

READ the attached documents, including the minutes from our last EGSA Executive Council Meeting (full of important info about special interest groups, EGSA nominations, seminars, curriculum revisions, fall activities, and more); an open letter to English Grad Students from Dr. Russell; and a revised EGSA Purposes and Functions Document.

NOMINATE yourself or some other capable person for one of the open EGSA positions (see the Executive Council notes–attached–for a list of available positions).

PLAN on attending the Armstrong Browning Library’s Browning Festival 2010 next weekend, from May 6-8. For more info, see the web announcement:

and finally, REJOICE with our own Vivien and her husband Matt as they celebrate the birth of their daughter (pictures attached!):

Dear friends and colleagues,

It is with profound joy and gratitude to our Lord God that we write to announce the birth of our daughter, Joanna Pascale Zelazny Dinan. Joanna was born by Caesarian section at 6:59am on Thursday April 22nd, 2010 at Providence Hospital in Waco, TX, USA. Weighing 7lbs 13oz., and measuring 20.5 inches in length, she has beautiful blonde hair, blue eyes, is very alert, and has so far been gracious enough to allow her exhausted parents the opportunity to rest a bit. Vivien is recovering well from her surgery, and expects to be back to full capacity soon. We are anxious to introduce Joanna to each of you!

Cordially,
Matt and Vivien
