EGSA: Publish a paper! Come to a lecture! Eat popcorn!

What’s the buzz? Tell me what’s happening!
Kind and patient as all of you are, I know this is the question
you’ve all been asking today. Well, the answer is that much is
happening in the world of EGSA this week. Here are the things
that deserve your attention:

aEGSA Spring Heteroglossia Event: “Just 120960 Minutes: Write a Publishable Paper in 12 Weeks or Less”

Join us as Drs. Beth Womack and Tom Hanks share their experience with getting papers published and
discuss Wendy Belcher’s new book, Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks: A Guide to Academic
Publishing Success.
In the Faculty Lounge at 2:30 on Wednesday, March 23rd.

aHoagwood Film Viewing and Lecture:

Just a few reminders as we approach the Hoagwood Lecture (which will finally happen on Thursday,
barring any further calamities. Just in case you're interested, the latest in this saga of problems
is the sudden illness of the elderly proprietors of the Judge Baylor B&B, where Dr. Hoagwood was
originally scheduled to stay).

LECTURE: “Visual Art and the Fictions of Adaptation.” (In addition to being a film critic, Dr. Hoagwood, an English prof at Texas A&M, is a nineteenth-century British scholar. For more information, see http://www.bayloregsa.org/conference/ ). The lecture will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 @ 3:30 in the Cox Lecture Hall (basement of the Armstrong-Browning Library), with refreshments to follow.

FREE FOOD & COLLEGIALITY OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU! A few spots remain for the pre-lecture luncheon that is to be held for Dr. Hoagwood in at noon on Thursday. This is a good opportunity to get to know a faculty member of a neighboring institution and to mix with the Baylor faculty and grad students who will be there as well. And, of course, there is good free food (a full buffet, I believe). If you are interested, please contact our hospitality chair DeAnn Barta (deann_barta@baylor.edu).

NOW FOR THE POPCORN! Since Dr. Hoagwood’s Lecture will address several films (listed in full at http://www.bayloregsa.org/conference/), we will have a viewing of one of the “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” movies he will be discussing. You can attend this even if your schedule does not allow you to attend Dr. Hoagwood’s lecture – be at CS G-03 at 3:30 on Wednesday.

We hope to see you at some or all of these events this week.
On behalf of the lecture committee,
Steve Petersheim,
Lecture Organizer

aHelp Needed for Book Sale:

Hello EGSA members,
It’s your friendly neighborhood Fundraising Chair. As the book sale at the end of March is approaching (exact dates and times coming REALLY soon, I promise), we are seeking book donations from the English faculty. I will also be sending out an email shortly to all university faculty as well. As I am a commuter, I am not on campus as much as some. I am seeking a few people who would be willing to help share the task of picking up books from professors, so that they may be more willing to hand over their books (since they don’t have to do any of the lugging). I have requested that all faculty who wish to donate books contact me, so I will be the point person, but for those pick-ups I can’t handle, it would be lovely to have some help. Thank you to those of you who have helped with pick-ups already!

So, please contact me at lisa_echtenkamp@baylor.edu, if you'd like to be a pal, or just run me down
in the hall or something. I'm around sometimes.
As soon as I have managed to communicate clearly and efficiently with the Student Reservations
people about WHICH dates are open WHERE we would like to set up, I will send out the final
date/time/location information, as well as yet another solicitation for assistance in manning (or
humanning, shame on me) the book sale itself.
Sincerely,
Lisa Echtenkamp
EGSA Fundraising Chair

a Support the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas:

EGSA:

Many of you know that my son Bodhi suffers from epilepsy. Until his first seizure last spring, Stacey and I knew very little seizure disorders. My father suffered the last years of his life from epilepsy. Ashamed of his disorder, he attempted to hide his seizures from us. The Epilepsy Foundation of Texas (EFTX) does a wonderful job helping families and educating the public about seizures and seizure disorders. On April 9 the Dallas branch of EFTX will host its annual fundraiser at the Dallas Zoo. Stacey and I are lucky; Bodhi’s seizures have decreased without medication through a change in diet. Many families, however, continue to struggle to find equilibrium years after initial diagnosis. If you are interested in participating in the April event or if you would like to make a donation to a worthy cause, please see the attached flyer or visit the EFTX website – www.eftx.org.

All the best,
Dustin Morrow
