EGSA Digest 11.02.12
EGSA,
Right now you could be working on one of your seminar papers. You’ve made the right choice.
Announcements
Pumpecanfest
- Our social chairs deserve our thanks for their hard work, great events, and creative naming practices.
- Can I suggest for next year Pumpskorcakeandicecreamfest? What we lose in euphony we’ll make up for in Skor Cake. This year’s fest takes place Sat., 17 Nov., 7pm at Ryan Womack’s house.
- See me for description of Skor Cake or its real (PG-13) name.
Presidential Election Day
- Don’t forget your civic responsibility on Tuesday. Especially if you’ll be voting in Ohio.
- But even if you live in Texas, don’t let your symbolic vote go to waste, particularly when there are so many great write-in options:
- And then, of course, there’s the other 95% of the ballot that’s worth glancing at. You know, since local politics have a direct impact on your life and all that.

- Music and food. And tributes to Andrew Joseph Armstrong by important people.
- And the Foyer of Meditation!
Life on the Grad Line, Tues., 6 Nov., 12:30-1:30pm, Fentress Room (SUB)
- Here’s a description of the event that made it to my inbox:
- This workshop will include advice from Dr. Jim Roberts, author of Shiny objects: Why we spend money we don’t have in search of happiness we can’t buy. In addition a couple of graduate students will speak to their own experiences of handling the ups and downs of finances. No matter where you at in life – new to graduate school or supporting a family, a master’s student or a doctoral candidate – there will be something in this workshop for you. Please join us and remember you are welcome to bring in your lunch in order to share a meal with fellow graduate students. There is no need to RSVP for this event. Here is the link for the full workshop series.
- So let me get this straight. No matter where I at in life, I can go to this workshop and learn how to make ends meet, but I have to bring my own lunch and then share it with other graduate students? I recommend taking a barrel of meal and a cruse of oil.
- (That’s a bowl of flour and a jug of oil for all you non-KJVers.)
PROFF Workshop, Tues., 6 Nov., 3:30-5:00pm, Pat Neff 300
- “On the Trail and at the Table: The Substance and Style of Interviewing†Huh?
- Fregister .
Downton Abbey Showing and Discussion, Thurs., 8 Nov., 5:00-6:30pm, CS 101
- How many freaking episodes are there? I’m out of jokes.
PROFF Workshop, Tues., 13 Nov., 1:30-5:00pm, Pat Neff 300, 105, and 107
- “Mock Interviews” (but not interviewers)
- Or mock the name of the interview prep workshop offered the week before. Your choice. Once you finish, you probably want to fregister for this event if you want a job any time soon.
SET Workshop, Thurs., 15 Nov., 3:30-4:30pm, No Location Posted
- “Making the Most of the First Day of Class”
- Because, let’s be honest, that’s probably the last time they’re going to listen to you. Fregister .
So you have a lot of decisions the next couple of weeks. As President Kilpatrick likes to say and attempts to model, “Make good choices.”
