EGSA Digest 02.22.13
EGSA,
Hey.
Announcements
Important, Updated Proclamation by President Kilpatrick on the Prospective Student Weekend: Now with Typographical Corrections and Never-Before-Seen Content!
Greetings to all and sundry: I send you this note to remind you of the prospective student weekend’s happenings next weekend, on the afternoon of Friday, March 1, and the morning of Saturday, March 2. This is the first time the department is holding such an event, and Dr. Barcus has asked that the graduate students be a strong presence at the event, as he thinks we are one of the better selling points for the department. Consider yourself honored.
There are 16 confirmed attendees, so we actually will need you to be there. Consider joining us for the afternoon of Friday, March 1, from 1:00-3:00 in the fourth floor lounge for a very informal meet and greet or for the 19 Century Research Seminar at the ABL at 3:30. Dr. Ralph Wood will be speaking, and there will be cookies served after the presentation. Saturday morning’s festivities will begin at 9:00, where there will be another reception, this time with both graduate students and faculty members, in the fourth floor lounge. Immediately following the reception, there will be a conference panel of faculty members and graduate students at 10:00. We need your participation in this activity. Please make an attempt to be active presence in the department for this weekend.

Advice for Life
- There are emails that you should always ignore and emails that you should always heed. Any email requesting your help with an EGSA Book Sale is an email you should heed. Any email that quotes Mark Twain also falls under this category.
- And while we’re at it, this: Be respectful to your superiors, if you have any, also to strangers, and sometimes to others. If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. That will be sufficient. If you shall find that he had not intended any offense, come out frankly and confess yourself in the wrong when you struck him; acknowledge it like a man and say you didn’t mean to.
- And don’t forget that bit about the EGSA Book Sale. Contact Adam Marshall.
Upcoming Events 20-21CRS, Fri., 22 Feb., 2:30-3:30pm, 4th Floor Faculty Lounge
- “Lanta Davis and James Watson on Hemingway and Religion in the 4th Floor Faculty Loungeâ€
- Well, Lanta and James, bring the house down, break a leg, knock ‘em dead, and do other things Hemingway would probably do if he were here.
Lecture, Fri., 22 Feb., 5-6pm, Baines Room
- Kyla Ebels-Duggan, “The Right, the Good, and the Threat of Despair – (Kantian) Ethics and the Need for Hope in Godâ€
- I’m definitely going to Baines Room to talk about the Threat of Despair.

Lecture, Wed., 27 Feb., 3:00-4:30pm, Bennett Room
- Deborah Cohen, “Other People’s Bastards – Adoption and Illegitimacy in Twentieth Century Britainâ€
- Apparently some people were a bit shocked and possibly even offended last week by this announcement and its commentary. Perhaps they overlooked that this discussion is specific to Britain. That should explain things resolve any lingering uneasiness.

Ralph Wood, “Chesterton and Newmanâ€
- Okay. I see where he’s going with this.
