EGSA Digest 10.26.12

October 26, 2012 EGSA Digests 0

EGSA,
I know you’re starved for information this week, so dig in.

Announcements

Upcoming Frights

  • There’s something scary looming. It’s about 20 pages long, and it requires you to complete about a year’s worth of research and writing in less than a month.
  • And then there’s Halloween. As with the Seminar Paper, which requires you to pretend to be a legitimate scholar, you are expected to adopt a false persona, and you are judged on how convincing and clever you are. And we’re not talking about Facebook here. Spooky.
  • And, finally, someone informed me that today is the Feast Day of King Alfred the Great. Frightening? Oh, where to begin?

Cookie Report

  • They were really good.
  • So was the information about registering for Spring classes and succeeding in graduate school. It’s attached.

Deadlines

  • Last day to submit record of oral examination for dissertation/thesis students for Dec. 2012 Commencement: Fri., 2 Nov. 2012.
  • Last day to satisfy foreign language requirement for Dec. 2012 Commencement: Fri., 9 Nov. 2012
  • Last day to submit defended and approved copy of dissertation/thesis for Dec. 2012 Commencement: Fri., 9 Nov. 2012
  • Last chance to bask in the security of graduate school before facing the real world: Commencement

Upcoming Events

Robert Browning and Victorian Poetry Conference at 200, Thurs.-Sat., 1-3 Nov., ABL

  • Add the format of the conference to the list of things I don’t understand. (See one of the emails you received regarding this event.)
  • But even that shouldn’t keep you from fregistering.

Socratic Method for Any Class and Personality, Thurs., 1 Nov., 10-11am, Maybe They’ll Tell You Where to Go When You Fregister

  • Dr. Trent Dougherty
  • Teaching 101: Find a way to relate to your students. Socratic Method ought to suffice.
  • Fregister

Life on the Grad Line, Tues., 6 Nov., No Time Listed, Fentress Room (SUB)

  • “Handling Finances in Graduate School”
  • Obviously you need to master finances before you move on to scheduling.

PROFF Workshop, Tues., 6 Nov., 3:30-5:00pm, Pat Neff 300

  • “On the Trail and at the Table: The Substance and Style of Interviewing”
  • What?

Downton Abbey Showing and Discussion, Thurs., 8 Nov., 5:00-6:30pm, CS 101

  • Remember we’re skipping next week for the Robert Browning/Victorian Poetry/200 Conference.
  • If it were anything less than more British art, we would certainly carry on.

Though I sometimes joke about the length of the Digest, the long weekly email is actually pretty convenient. Without it you might get lots of individual emails from a variety of sources throughout the week about the many upcoming events. You might even get the same announcement from multiple people or an announcement multiple times from the same person. Thank goodness for our flawless system. Which, don’t forget, includes attachments this week.
