EGSA: Support a child who needs a heart transplant, find a job

April 1, 2011 EGSA Digests 0

I apologize for sending two EGSA digests in one week, but our first entry, submitted by Vivien Zelazny, is too important to wait until Monday. Read below for news about how you can help support a toddler in need of a heart transplant, and how you can glean some wisdom for the job hunt later this month.

Happy weekend! Bethany

** CHILD – HEART
A fellow graduate student needs your help! Six months after starting graduate school at Baylor, philosophy student Ross Parker, and his wife found out their two-year-old daughter was in need of a heart transplant. The Parkers had Baylor’s student health insurance, but this does not cover the cost of a transplant. They have now teamed up with Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) in order to raise the funds needed. Our goal is to raise $75,000.

There are several ways you can help. COTA has set up a website with all the information on it at www.COTAforLeahGraceP.com This page has a place for online donations, updates about our future fundraisers, and blogs about how Leah and her family are doing.

This Saturday, April 2, we’re hosting a fundraiser titled, “Leah’s Little Picassos” at Pinwheel Kids on Valley Mills. There will be a bake sale, silent auction, face painting, refreshments and more. With a $5 donation kids get a 5×7 canvas with a decorative ribbon that they can paint there and then take home. Please come and invite your friends!

Our ongoing fundraisers include:
We are selling Mary Kay products will 100% of your purchase price going directly to Leah’s account. Why not buy your makeup or a gift for someone and have the money go to a great cause?

We’re selling cute, $2 “Have a Heart for Leah Grace” bracelets (as seen on the website) and t-shirts.

We have a booth at the Waco Craft Gallery selling antique tea cups.

And we always welcome donations.

If you would like to purchase any of these things or have any questions please contact Angela Douglass (at angela_douglass@baylor.edu) or Liz Gage (at elizgage@gmail.com).

**JOB – FINDING

Ever wondered how (or whether) you’ll get a job after Graduate School? Find the prospect of job hunting intimidating? Adrienne Akins has generously offered to share her recent experiences of searching, applying, interviewing, and successfully obtaining a university position. Come on Wednesday, April 13th at 2:00 pm (room TBA) to hear about her experiences and ask questions.
