EGSA Digest 02.03.14
EGSA,
What a weekend. The drama. The pageantry. The controversy. The shock. The disappointment. The parties, of course.
Oh, Punxsutawney Phil, you ol’ rascal.
And on top of it all, there was the suspense of not having a Friday Digest, which was delayed as we awaited the official results of the New Student Orientation Co-Chairs voting. With the eleventh-hour registration, inexperienced precinct chairs, and massive voter fraud, we made the Bush-Gore election look like the judges’ decision in a beauty contest (which, incidentally, it ended up being). We’d like to thank all of the candidates for their grace and patience as we tracked down the last dues receipts to compile the final tally.
Whew. I know we’re all looking forward to a nice, calm, relaxing weekend beginning on Friday before things really start heating up on the 14th.
Announcements
New Student Orientation Co-Chairs
- We are happy to announce that Sarah Clark and Elizabeth Travers will be serving as EGSA’s New Student Orientation Co-Chairs for 2014. We are sincerely grateful for the excellent work of last year’s co-chairs and for all those who expressed a willingness to serve in this capacity this year.
- We’d also like to remind everyone that in our democratic, egalitarian association, you have to give us money for your vote to count. If you plan to participate in the EGSA general election in April, please make sure you’ve paid your $10 dues to Christina Boyles.
- If you are uncertain whether you’ve paid, you are welcome to pay again to be sure. Or you can just check with Christina, who has the complete, updated list.
Free Valentine’s Dates (Prospective Students Need a Place to Stay)
- The English department is holding its second annual Prospective Student Weekend on 14-16 February. This delightful event is an opportunity for applicants to our program to visit campus, meet the faculty and all of you great people, attend some social gatherings and informational meetings, have a generally splendid time, and be surreptitiously scrutinized before final admission decisions are made.
- They need a place to stay.
- If you have some extra room, generous impulses, and passable hygiene, please consider opening your doors to one or more of these potential colleagues. Contact President Michael Milburn (Michael_Milburn@baylor.edu) directly if you are willing to host someone or if you have any related questions.
Upcoming Events
Â
PROFF Workshop, Tues., 4 Feb., 9:00–10:30am, Creekmore
- Compose Yourself: Preparing your Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letters
- Self-confidence a little too high these days? No cure like pulling out the CV. But maybe you’ll learn how to inconspicuously increase the margins or font size or something.
MRRS, Friday, 7 Feb., 3:30–4:30pm, ABL Lecture Hall
- Dr. Jeanette Marsh, “The Old Saxon Word-Hoard: A Continental Treasure”
- Well, this is embarrassing. I was promptly corrected after last week’s Digest. It turns out that Dr. Marsh will be talking about Old Saxon words, not Old English words. You can only imagine how sheepish I’m feeling. My apologies to all the non-Old English-speaking Saxons.
Happy Monday morning!
