EGSA,

Announcements

New Orientation Chairs

  • Nominations for new Orientation Chairs are due today (see minutes from last week’s EGSA meeting).
  • To nominate someone who likes people generally and incoming students specifically, please send an email to President Kilpatrick and Secretary Leatham. To nominate someone who is grumpy, rude, and generally unhelpful, give that person an early Valentine. You may nominate yourself in either of those two ways.
  • If you are nominated the first way, you’ll receive an email by the end of the day. To accept your nomination, write a very brief statement (100-150 words) about why you’d like to serve as an Orientation Chair and what you have to offer (stable legs and a soft seat?). Then email that statement to Secretary Leatham by next Monday at noon.
  • If you are nominated the second way, you probably won’t be one of the two Orientation Chairs, but you may get some candy.
  • A special election will be held next week.

Valentine’s Day

  • As one of my divorced friends likes to say, “Valentine’s Day is just an excuse for greedy flower shops and greeting card companies to make more money.”
  • However you define it, enjoy it. Thurs., 14 Feb., all day

Spring Thesis/Dissertation Formatting Workshops

  • Wed., 13 Feb., 3-5pm, Morrison 120 Thurs.,
  • 14 Feb., 3-5pm, Morrison 120
  • How romantic.

Upcoming Events

19CRS, Today, 3:30-4:30pm, ABL Lecture Hall

  • Dr. Josh King, “Tennyson’s ‘Christian Year’: The Minimum of Faith and National Spiritual Community” It’s all good now. I did get a flyer. Sorry about last week’s panic.

Downton Abbey, Tues., 12 Feb., 5:00-6:15pm, CS 101

  • I got a few (extra) dirty looks this week. Of course, I’m a socially awkward introvert, but just in case anyone was offended by last week’s announcement, I’m reverting back to proper spelling/pronunciation this week to demonstrate the appropriate level of reverence for the subject.

PROFF Workshop – Finding Fit: Conducting a Discerning Job Search, Mon., 18 Feb., 6:15-7:45pm, Draper 152

  • Here’s your first tip: You’ll “fit” a lot better if you’re really smart, you publish a lot of quality writing, you have an excellent teaching record, and you’re really good with people.
  • Plenty more where that came from. Consider checking it out.

20-21CRS, Fri., 22 Feb., 2:30-3:30pm, 4th Floor Faculty Lounge

  • “Lanta Davis and James Watson on Hemingway and Religion in the 4th Floor Faculty Lounge”
  • How many funny combinations can you find in that title? My favorite is Hemingway and religion. Actually, that might be the only one.

Happy nominating, Valentining, and putting off your writing and grading,

Jeremy Leatham EGSA Secretary
