EGSA,

Welcome back from Spring Break. Yeah, that was just last week. Now is the time of the semester when procrastination really takes some creative justification. Good luck. Some of the following might help.

Announcements

Charles G. Smith Lecture, Today, 3:30-4:30pm, CS 101

  • Ronald Schuchard, “The Man Who Suffers and the Mind Which Creates in The Wasteland”
  • Uh, so that would be “Any Male Who Tries to Read the Poem and a Smarter One Than Mine”

Lecture, Today, 3:30-4:30pm, Jones 200

  • Michael Livingston, “Tolkien’s Creation by Edition: The Medieval Origins of the Hobbit”
  • Well that’s just unfortunate scheduling, but it does present a number of intriguing match-ups: Eliot vs. Tolkien (make your pick at 3:30), Madame Sosostris vs. Gandalf, Stetson vs. Bilbo (ring off), Tiresias vs. Bilbo (ring on), Eliot’s footnotes vs. Tolkien’s appendices. This has all the makings of an ultra-nerdy alternative to March Madness. Have fun.

EGSA Book Sale

  • Tues. – Wed., 26-27 Mar., 10am-3pm, SUB

Discussions of Beall Poets’ Work

  • Faculty members will lead discussions on the work of this year’s Beall Poetry Festival participants. Listed below are the poets to be discussed, the faculty members leading each discussion, and the meeting information. Contact the faculty member leading the discussion for a packet of the poet’s work.
  • Les Murray: Luke Ferreter, Tues., 26 Mar., 12:30pm, CS 4th
  • Tracy K. Smith: Emily Setina, Thurs., 28 Mar., 1pm, CS 4th
  • Bobby C. Rogers: Richard Russell, Thurs., 28 Mar., 3:20pm, CS 4th James Fenton: Josh King, Tues., 2 Apr., 2:30pm, CS 4th

Easter Break

  • You will be foolish if you go to school on Mon., 1 Apr.
  • That is not a joke. Foolish. You’re also off on Fri., 29 Mar.

Upcoming Events

Bad Wine, Bad Poetry Night, Sat., 23 Mar., 7-10pm, Marshalls’ House

  • Adam and Brittany live at 2500 Marketplace Dr., Apt. #837,
  • Bring a bottle of wine (good or bad, EGSA will provide the glasses), or a snack that goes with wine, and/or some poetry (good or bad) to read aloud.

Downton Abbey, Tues., 26 Mar., 5:00-6:15pm, CS 101

  • I’m taking suggestions. Submit your commentary.

PROFF Workshop, Wed., 27 Mar., 10:00-11:30am, Jones 2nd Floor

  • “On the Trail & At the Table: The Substance and Style of Interviewing”
  • Is the posted location of this event supposed to somehow represent the frustrating sense of disorientation you feel while looking for a job? Wander around. You’ll find it. And as for the workshop, I’d probably start looking near the Creekmore Room.

SET: Assessing Creativity, Tues., 2 Apr., 11am-12pm, No location posted

  • Forget the fact that assessing creativity probably involves a complete contradiction; if they’re teaching you how to find it hidden somewhere in those student papers, you can’t miss this one.

PROFF Workshop, Wed., 3 Apr., 10am-12pm, Pat Neff 300, 105, and 107

  • Mock Interviews (You must attend the previous week’s PROFF Workshop in order to participate in the mock interviews.)
  • It’s much better to feel like an idiot when it doesn’t really count. Trust me.

Beall Poetry Festival, Wed. – Sat., 3-6 Apr.

  • Here is the full schedule to our very fine annual poetry festival.
  • Get ready by attending a faculty-led poetry discussion or by attending tomorrow’s Bad Wine, Bad Poetry Night. Either event will increase your appreciation of these poets. It’s easier to appreciate poetry when somebody explains it to you or you are drunk.

Happy picking, poetry-ing, and procrastinating.
