EGSA Digest 10.04.13

October 4, 2013 EGSA Digests 0

EGSA,

All nonessential EGSA services have been shut down. Unpaid, we here at the Digest toil on.

Announcements

19CRS, Today, 3:30-4:30pm, ABL Lecture Hall

  • Sarah Robbins: “A Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic ‘Lean In’ Story: How Jane Addams and Henrietta Barnett Used Writing for Reciprocal Mentoring”
  • Prepare yourself. I can already see the Using Writing for Reciprocal Mentoring movement coming. It will be more annoying than a recent, unnamed political movement that has stalled the government—and just as productive.
  • This presentation, conversely, is sure to be delightful.

GSA Annual Tailgate

  • You. Uncle Dan. Stadium. Mañana.

Beauty . . .

  • . . . is in the eye of the beholder, unless you don’t get your picture to Kalani, in which case it is just in your hard drive or your SD card somewhere. So email a square, professionalish shot of yourself to Kalani (Kalani_Pattison@baylor.edu) by next Friday (11 Oct.) and get a pixilated version of yourself beheld, or in a beholder’s eye, or whatever.
  • Also, if you don’t have a bio yet, live a little and then include a short description with your emailed picture.
  • Failure to comply will result in a less professional website, fewer professional (and romantic) opportunities, and additional pathetic requests by your Secretary.

The Loop

  • Get others in it by emailing information about upcoming events to Vice-president Womack (Ryan_Womack@baylor.edu). Announcements for the Digest should be reviewed carefully for completeness of information and abundance of commentary opportunities and sent directly to the Secretary (Jeremy_Leatham@baylor.edu).

Upcoming Events

SET, Tues., 8 Oct., 2-3pm, TBA (upon registration)

  • Markus Hunziker, “Teaching Students with Different Levels of Preparedness”
  • Um, I’m not sure this applies here. As one of my students told me on the first day of class this semester, “We’re all here at Baylor, so obviously we’re, like, really smarter than people at other colleges.”
  • Looks like a crash and burn for you, Mr. Hunziker.
  • So go ahead and skip this one—unless, of course, you think it’s possible that a freshman student made a statement based on something other than accurate facts and sound reasoning.

Zotero Workshop, Wed., 9 Oct., 4-5pm, Jones 105

  • Librarians say,

Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources. It lives right where you do your work—in the web browser itself.

  • How the heck [hou-thuh-HEL] did the librarians find out that we just play on the Internet all day?

Benefactors Day, Thurs., 17 Oct., 3-5pm, ABL McLean Foyer of Meditation

  • Browning letters will be displayed.
  • Background music will be heard.
  • Refreshments will be consumed.
  • I will be . . . somewhere else. (See below.)

Due to Fall Break and a sibling’s nuptials, even the essential EGSA services must be shut down the next two weeks. Just remember to not go to school on 11 October and to check the EGSA calendar, and you’ll be fine.

Jeremy Leatham

EGSA Secretary
