January 24, 2014 EGSA Digests 0

EGSA,

So, hi. It’s been a while. Babies and holidays and nothing to announce and denial and stuff. Anyway. What’s up? I’ll tell you what’s up. Because that’s what we do here at the Digest.

Announcements

Nominations for Orientation Co-Chairs

  • The time has come to elect our orientation co-chairs for 2014. These are the people who answered all of our questions and made us feel welcome when we came to Baylor. We want good ones, as we’ve had in the past, so nominate someone special, like yourself or someone even nicer. Here’s the job description:
  • Like people, or pretend to
  • Help coordinate the Prospective Student Weekend (to be held 14-15 February)
  • Organize EGSA Orientation for incoming students (Fall 2014)
  • Update and revise the EGSA Handbook and have it approved by Dr. Barcus
  • Send out the Getting Started packet and other information to incoming students
  • Answer incoming students’ questions
  • If you know someone who would be good at that, ambush him or her with a nomination, which you should send to me by email (Jeremy_Leatham@baylor.edu) by the end of the day.
  • If you think you would be good at it, cut out the middleperson, and email me yourself.
  • If you are nominated, you will be notified tomorrow and, if you accept the nomination, asked to write a short statement aimed at persuading the grand EGSA body of your superior orienting skills.
  • Campaign statements will be due by Sunday night, and voting will being Monday morning. That’s when it gets crazy, as in the clicking on a link and then clicking on the bubbles next to the candidates of your choice kind of crazy.
  • And you thought you had nothing to look forward to next week.

Departmental Tea, Valentine’s Day, 2:30pm, CS 4th

  • Valentine’s Day. You know what I’m talking about. A little love. A little romance. A little flirtatious episode outside the Writing Center or on the staircase landing between floors 2 and 3. And, of course, a little departmental tea.
  • Get ready, by reading the following from the Social Committee:

Valentine’s Day falls on Friday this year, so the Social Committee is having a Valentine’s Tea at 2:30 that day.  We are asking faculty, staff, graduate students, English majors, anyone who regularly attends tea, to consider bringing some delectable edibles on Friday, Feb. 14th.

If you are able to bring something, please either sign up on the sheet provided in the mail room or contact Elizabeth Dell (Elizabeth_Dell@baylor.edu).

Thanks so much,

The Social Committee

  • So, we desire your presence, but we crave your food. Hope to see you/it there.

Upcoming Events

20th/21st CSRS, Fri., 31 Jan., 2:30–3:30pm, CS 4th

  • Professor Alan Jacobs, “Technocracy, Humanism and Total War”
  • My best guess: Terminator for academics, with you feeling more frightened than you should

MRRS, Fri., 7 Feb., 3:30–4:30pm, ABL Lecture Hall

  • Dr. Jeanette Marsh, “The Old Saxon Word-Hoard: A Continental Treasure”
  • My best guess: Dr. Marsh talking about Old English words, with you feeling dumber than you should

Happy nominating.

Jeremy Leatham

EGSA Secretary
