EGSA: A Hanukkah Miracle and Many Announcements

December 3, 2010 EGSA Digests 0

Happy 2nd Day of Hanukkah, EGSA! We have a lot of exciting announcements this week:

First, in honor of the holiday, please enjoy–and perhaps dance to–this adorable and catchy video from The Maccabeats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSJCSR4MuhU&feature=player_embedded

(What better time to hear about a miracle than the end of the semester, when we are relying on divine aid to finish seminar papers, grading, and other semester work?)

Now, on to business:

EGSA and English Department Announcements

* EGSA MEETING! – Please make every effort to attend our last general EGSA meeting of the semester, on Tuesday, December 7 at 2:30 PM. (The room in Carroll Science is TBD, so watch for another email with that info). At this meeting we will discuss a number of important things, including the results of the recent EGSA and Conference Committee surveys, upcoming EGSA events, and much more. We will also have a time for general questions or concerns about the program, so whether you are a new or veteran student, please come share your questions and wisdom with the rest of EGSA

* FINAL BRUNCH for TAs! The English Department has offered to help fund a brunch for the day TA’s give our final. Ms. Callan will bring a variety of kolaches and sweet rolls from the Czech bakery. Plates, napkins, cups will be provided. Please bring some breakfasty items or juice of your own to add to the brunch. Hot water for tea will be provided, but you may wish to bring your own coffee. The brunch will be held in the 4th floor lounge of Carroll Science on Thursday, December 9, at 10 A.M. Please email bethany_bear@baylor.edu and let her know if you will be contributing juice or food. See you there!

* EGSA Christmas Party – Earlier this week, our EGSA Social Chairs sent out the following invitation to the Christmas party. In case you missed that email, here are the details:
You are invited to a Christmas party! It will be at Danielle Williams’s house on Sat. Dec. 11th at 7 pm. Come and celebrate the completion of another semester and partake in fun activities like decorating sugar cookies and a white elephant gift exchange. Please bring your family or significant other.

Details:
We will have snacks, drinks, and sugar cookie dough, but please consider bringing a snack, beverage, dessert, or decoration for cookies to contribute to the festivity.

White Elephant Exchange! (a cheap way to give gifts)
-bring something random, funny, homemade, or nice to give as a gift. Pick up something you have around your house like a book or an item someone gave you in the past that you are not using. The Dollar Store (or the like) could be a source of good gifts, too, but don’t spend too much on it (no iPods, for example). We will open them one at a time and be able to “steal” gifts others have opened before us. It’s really fun to see what people come up with and “fight” over a Christmas mug or an alligator doorstop.

We will send another email as a reminder and with directions to the Williams ranch.

Other Items of Interest

* CONFERENCE OPPORTUNITY – Dr. Emily Setina is co-organizing a conference at Notre Dame, and she thought many Baylor grad students would be interested in submitting.

The conference is an English graduate conference at Notre Dame March 3-4, 2011, with the title “The Sincerest Form: Literary Imitation, Adaptation, and Parody.” It will be a small, single-stream conference so presenters are guaranteed to have an audience. The call for papers deadline is Dec. 17, though we may extend it a bit if necessary. If you are interested, please see the attached call for papers.

* JOB POSTING – The ever-thoughtful Adrienne Akins thought the following job listing, from Redeemer University College in Ontario, might interest many Baylor Grad Students. For more information, see the job posting at <http://careers.cccu.org/jobs/3772060>

* CONVERSATION WITH STANLEY HAUERWAS. Stanley Hauerwas, author of more than 20 books and reputedly “one of the most important living Christian theologians and ethicists,” will be speaking at Baylor on Monday, December 6, at 3:20 P.M. This “conversation” will be held in the Kayser Auditorium (main floor of Hankamer School of Business). Hauerwas is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke University and holds a joint appointment at the Duke Divinity School and Duke School of Law. For more information, see his Duke profile: http://www.divinity.duke.edu/academics/faculty/stanley-hauerwas

A PDF flyer for the event is attached.

* COMMON PRAYER RELEASE PARTY – If you are looking for a break from the end-of-semester stress, you might enjoy a brief service of music and prayer that is happening at Calvary Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 7 at 7 PM. In addition to a time of Advent worship and prayer, we will be exploring a new resource for prayer and worship from Shane Claiborne and The Simple Way community. A flyer with details is attached. Contact bethany_bear@baylor.edu if you have any questions.
