EGSA: Foreign Language and Giving Thanks

November 19, 2010 EGSA Digests 0

There’s only one item in this pre-Thanksgiving digest, so before reading further, you have a little time to watch this Thanksgiving internet jewel: Johnny Cash singing “Thanksgiving Prayer” on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. God bless the 90s.

Now for business: If you are hoping to fulfill one or both of your foreign language requirements this summer, please read the following information from Dr. Barcus.

Blessings as you travel, rest, and work this Thanksgiving! Bethany

From Dr. Barcus: See the message below from Dr. Ortuño in Modern Foreign Languages. The Spanish course particularly needs support. If any of the grad students want Spanish, they should contact Marian Ortuno as soon as possible. Thanks.

Subject: Summer Reading Courses for Graduate Students and Proficiency Information Dear Graduate Program Directors:

Please be so kind as to pass along to your graduate students the information in the two attachments. I will also forward the course ad to the Graduate School and it will be e-mailed to all graduate students who need to satisfy foreign language proficiency as part of their degree requirements. A copy of the ad will also appear on the MFL Web site.

In order for us to set up these summer courses and gear the content to individual student needs, I am asking you to please poll your students and send me the names of those who plan on taking each course. The courses are—

Summer I Summer II FRE FRE GER
SPA

Greek and Latin 5321/22 are not taught in one, five-week summer session. Both are taught individually in Summer I and Summer II.

Professors tentatively scheduled to teach these courses would like to contact their prospective students ahead of time to solicit important information about their particular interests. Since we will be offering two sections of FRE 5370/71, one in Summer I and another in Summer II, we need to know who will sign up for each section and of those, which students are flexible in that they could take French either Summer session should it become necessary to even out enrollments.

Our summer reading course enrollments have a ripple effect on the number of MFL undergraduate courses we will teach in the summer and on who will get to teach them, so it is very important for us to have some numbers ahead of time.

Thank you for your cooperation, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Best regards,
Marian Ortuño
