Digest: Poetry, Heteroglossia, and Books! Books! Books!

November 6, 2010 EGSA Digests 0

Good morning, EGSA! I hope you are all enjoying this gloriously autumnal weather. I think I will be celebrating the frost with a a fire in the fireplace, a cup of tea, and a pile of grading. (Then again, maybe I should stick with the tea. The temptation to burn the papers might be too much!)

Lots is happening in the department and in Waco this week. Here’s the update: DEPARTMENT EVENTS
* Helpful words from our VP, Danielle Williams:

~ First, for your enjoyment, the five stages of grading.
~ Second, for your enlightenment, a schedule. Please support the English Department by attending the upcoming events!

Thursday, 11/11 Poetry Reading from Poet-in-Residence Dr. William Davis (4:00, Draper 116) [Ms. Calllan also encouraged all grad students to attend this reading, if possible.]

Friday, 11/12 20th Century Studies Research Seminar (2:30, CS 4th floor lounge): Professor Judith Kroll, University of Texas “Backstory: Working on Sylvia Plath’s Collected Poems.”

Wednesday, 11/17 Departmental Fall Luncheon (time TBA, CS 4th floor lounge) * Heteroglossia Update from Michael Milburn:

Please join us in the fourth floor faculty lounge at 2:30-3:30pm on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010 for an illuminating session on how to succeed in today’s job market. Dr. Josh King, himself a recent tenure-track hire here at Baylor, will share his experience of applying for positions at a variety of universities and will field questions on topics such as CVs, teaching philosophy statements, and professional interviews. This event is sure to be of practical value for all who attend.

WACO EVENTS

* Margy Thomas thought you would all like to know about the enormous Friends of the Library Booksale, which runs Nov 4-7 at HOT Fairgrounds. Margy write, “I thought EGSA members might be interested in this opportunity to stuffl their bookshelves with yet more $1 used paperbacks. :-)”
