EGSA Digest: Office visits, online jobs, brunch

October 30, 2010 EGSA Digests 0

Since delayed gratification is good for the soul, I have arranged this digest in order from departmental updates (first) to food (last). Read carefully and savor the conclusion!

* Via Mary Frank, an update from Dr. Barcus:

Dr. Barcus writes, “In these last few weeks I have enjoyed visiting and talking with many of the English graduate students, and I am determined that they should feel welcome to visit me in the office. However, I would like very much for these conversations to be as substantive as possible and not to be restricted to programmatic details that have answers in published documents. Thus, while I want students to visit me frequently to talk about whatever is of concern to them, whenever possible graduate students should be aware that many questions can be answered by consulting the on-line Graduate Catalog available via the Graduate School homepage. Secondly, there are documents in the English Department office, which outline in greater detail requirements, procedures, and processes for both the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Feel free to ask Lois or Julia for a copy of the appropriate document. One caveat, however, is that these documents have not been updated in recent years so some procedures may have changed, especially procedures related to the Graduate School. I hope to attend to this revision soon. In the meantime, students should visit my office frequently and as need dictates.”

Film Lecture on Steven Spielberg.
Dr. Jim Kendrick will be presenting a lecture entitled “Rethinking Spielberg” at the Browning Square Graduate Housing Community on Nov. 4th at 7 pm.
He presented this same talk a couple weeks ago at Dr. Ferretter’s 20th Cent. Research Seminar, but if you didn’t get a chance to hear it then, come over to Browning Square (9th and Bagby) for take two.
See Cameron Moore (john_c_moore@baylor.edu) for details.

Subject: Online Scoring Opportunity- MET PLATO

I am a recruiter with Educational Testing Service and I am currently recruiting professionals with English Language Arts experience to assist in the part time reviewing and coding of videotaped classroom sessions.
Educational Testing Service has partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s MET (Measures of Effective Teaching) project to test and develop multiple measures of teacher effectiveness. This project is informed by the real work of real teachers in real classrooms. It goes beyond the exclusive use of student assessments as a proxy for effectiveness and, instead, is geared to developing a set of measures that together serve as an accurate indicator of a teacher’s impact on student achievement.

The scoring position requires the individuals to have a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language Arts and at least 2 years of teaching experience. No previous experience in classroom observation coding is required. We are hoping to certify interested applicants in November 2010 and have them begin work in January 2011. The program will run until June 2011. The shifts will be either 16, 20 or 40 hours per week and all of the work can be done on line from a home computer.

Can you please let me know of anyone that might be interested in this opportunity? You can view the specific program details via the link below:

* From Steve Petersheim, a notice for a BRUNCH @ FINALS!

Steve writes, “I am proposing a TA Brunch on the morning of the ENG 1302 final – just because. ALL ENGLISH GRAD STUDENTS ARE WELCOME! You need not be teaching ENG 1302 to come. If there is enough interest, you will receive a followup announcement with time, location, etc. (The ENG 1302 Final is on Thursday, Dec. 9.) Please talk to me (Steve) or send me an email if you are interested in such an event: Steven_Petersheim@baylor.edu”
